How do I figure out my grade?

Converting percents to decimalsWhen I grade Math 112 tests I often write the raw score as a fraction.  For example, on Test #1 the total number of points possible was 18.  If you got 13 out of 18 how do you figure out the percent?  Here's how you do it!  Just divide the denominator (18) into the numerator (13) and round the answer to the nearest hundredth.  Then change the answer to a percent.

So, for our example:  13 divided by 18 is .72222222. . . .   To round to the nearest hundredth you look at the number in the thousandths place (the third number after the decimal), which is 2.  Since this is not 5 or larger you do not round the number in the hundreds place up.  So .722222 . . . . is .72 to the nearest hundredths.

Now we have to change this to a percent - but that's not hard!  Just put 72 over 100 and you can see the score is 72%!

If you show me how to change YOUR raw score into a percentage by writing it out on a separate sheet of paper I will give you 2 extra credit points.  But don't tell anyone!  This offer is only for students who read this blog!!!!!  So how will I know if you read my blog?  You have to leave a comment here!  If you do those 2 things (show work and leave a comment) then I'll give you the extra credit points!!!!!  :)  Have a good day!

If you'd like to see some more examples about fractions, decimals, and percents  - here's a helpful website with a cute video.  http://shmoop.com/video/converting-percents-to-decimals/.
